Adventure, Friendship & Lasting Memories: Our Final Calvert Trust Devon Holiday
Creating Opportunities Through Adventure
At Tailored Transitions, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience adventure, build confidence and create lasting memories.
This summer, individuals and staff enjoyed an incredible five-day holiday at Calvert Trust Devon, taking part in a wide range of accessible outdoor activities designed to challenge, inspire and bring people together. The trip was made possible through the generous support of The Loves Foundation and was organised by our dedicated leadership teams.
The week held special significance as it marked our final visit to Calvert Trust Devon before its closure, making every moment even more meaningful.
A Holiday Full of New Experiences
Over the course of the week, individuals from Fernside, Oakside and Woodside took part in a packed programme of activities, including:
✅ Zip Wire
✅ Abseiling
✅ Canoeing
✅ Archery
✅ Bushcraft
✅ Crate Stacking
✅ Giant Swing
✅ Cycling
✅ Horse & Carriage Riding
✅ Swimming
Each activity was carefully designed to be inclusive, allowing people of all abilities to participate and experience the excitement of trying something new.
Many individuals achieved things they had never done before, demonstrating courage, determination and enthusiasm throughout the week.
Building Friendships and Confidence
The holiday was about much more than activities.
Individuals had the opportunity to socialise with others from across our services, spend time with new friends and enjoy the many evening events organised by the Calvert team.
The beautiful lakeside setting provided the perfect environment to relax, connect with others and enjoy being away from everyday routines.
A particular highlight for many was the sensory room and relaxing seating area overlooking the lake, which offered a calm space to recharge between activities.
Teamwork That Made a Difference
Throughout the week, staff from all homes worked together to ensure everyone could enjoy the experience safely and comfortably.
Whether supporting individuals during activities, helping at mealtimes or adapting plans where needed, the teamwork demonstrated by our staff was outstanding.
For some team members, this was their first visit to Calvert Trust. While there were a few understandable nerves before arrival, these quickly disappeared thanks to the welcoming atmosphere and support provided by both colleagues and Calvert staff.
The week highlighted the strength of collaboration across our team, with staff supporting one another regardless of which home they usually worked within.
Accessible and Person-Centred Support
One of the aspects we value most about Calvert Trust is it’s commitment to accessibility.
Activities were adapted where required to ensure everyone could take part in a way that suited their needs and abilities. The Calvert team were extremely accommodating when activity groups needed adjusting and were always available to offer support.
The catering team also went above and beyond, preparing meals to meet a range of dietary and IDDSI requirements, including blended and puréed diets. This ensured every individual could enjoy mealtimes with confidence and dignity.
Excellent facilities, including accessible wet rooms and specialist equipment, helped make the holiday comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.
Overcoming Challenges Together
Like any busy holiday, there were a few challenges along the way.
The exceptionally hot weather meant some activities needed adapting, and unfortunately the swimming pool was unavailable for periods of the week, meaning not everyone was able to enjoy a swim.
Accommodation also became quite warm during the heatwave. However, staff came prepared with sun protection, additional fans, cooling packs, water bottles and plenty of hydration breaks to ensure everyone remained safe and comfortable.
Despite these minor setbacks, the positive experiences and opportunities far outweighed any challenges.
A Family Perspective
One of the most touching moments of the week came from Lisa, Amelia's mum, who joined the holiday and shared her experience:
"I truly had a lovely week.
I had some really magical moments with Amelia this week.
A big thank you to all the staff for enabling that to happen.
I can see Amelia is going to have a great life and this week she really enjoyed herself." ❤️
Feedback such as this reminds us why opportunities like these are so important. They create moments of joy, strengthen relationships and provide experiences that families cherish forever.
Saying Goodbye to Calvert Trust Devon
As this was our final visit before the closure of Calvert Trust Devon, there was a sense of sadness alongside the celebrations.
For many years, Calvert has provided accessible adventure experiences that have enabled countless individuals to challenge themselves, gain confidence and create lifelong memories.
We are incredibly grateful to have been part of that journey and would like to thank everyone involved, including:
The individuals who embraced every opportunity
Our dedicated staff teams
Family members who joined and supported the trip
The Loves Foundation for their generous funding
The wonderful Calvert Trust staff who made everyone feel welcome
Looking Ahead
While this chapter has come to an end, the spirit of adventure continues.
The memories made, friendships strengthened and achievements celebrated throughout the week will stay with us for many years to come and inspire future opportunities for the people we support.
Here's to the adventures shared, the confidence gained and the wonderful memories made together. 💙
